Asheville Parks & Recreation shares updates on multiple projects

Press release from the City of Asheville:

As Asheville Parks & Recreation continues to enhance and improve facilities throughout the city, some construction projects are expected to temporarily impact nearby areas. The City of Asheville is dedicated to as little disruption to surrounding properties as possible.

Magnolia Park (51 Magnolia Ave.) – The well-loved community park in Montford near the Reed Creek Greenway is getting a modern facelift. Demolition of the restroom building is scheduled to begin on May 23 and last for five days. During this time, parts of the park and Short Flint St. will be inaccessible.

Weaver Park Tennis Courts (426 Merrimon Ave.) – As part of the upgrades to this sports park along the Glenn’s Creek Greenway in North Asheville, the popular tennis courts on the Merrimon Ave. side of the park will close for rebuilding on May 23. The parking lot and courts will be inaccessible due to construction, expected to last into summer. These courts will remain dedicated for tennis and not double striped for pickleball at the request of the surrounding neighborhoods. The playground, baseball field, basketball court, restrooms, and picnic shelter will remain open during this time.

Asheville Skatepark (50 N Cherry St.) – While design on the reimagining of North Carolina’s first concrete skatepark is just beginning, repairs to the stairs and replacement of portions of the fence along Cherry St. have begun and may intermittently affect traffic. The skate bowls and plaza are not expected to close while this work takes place.

Malvern Hills Pool (75 Rumbough Pl.) – As temperatures rise, Asheville Parks & Recreation’s public pools offer cool, safe, and affordable fun for community members of all ages. Malvern Hills Pool in West Asheville opens for the season on Memorial Day weekend (May 28-30, June 4-5, open weekdays starting June 8). Due to the increase in vehicles, Rumbough Pl. becomes a one-way thoroughfare from Sulphur Spring Rd. to Harris Ave. through Labor Day. Splasheville in Pack Square Park and Recreation Park Pool remain closed as essential components are repaired. Supply chain issues have affected the timeline to open these locations.
