Asheville Wild Birds Unlimited hosts falconry event

Press release

From Wild Birds Unlimited:

The Asheville Wild Birds Unlimited store in Gerber Village will be hosting Jeff Curtis with Curtis Wright Outfitters for a special program on falconry Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 5:30pm. Jeff will be bringing his red-tailed hawk Rocket Girl for the free educational program on the history and art of falconry.

The store will be open at 5:30 pm for guests to enjoy a Meet & Greet with Jeff and Rocket Girl. For the program, we will walk, escorted by Rocket Girl, to the Sunshine Institute in the building next to the store. After the program, guests are invited back to the Asheville Wild Birds Unlimited store for a raffle drawing of special treats including an Adopt an Animal package from the Friends of the WNC Nature Center for their resident red-tailed hawk, Zena. The winner will not get to take a live hawk home with them, but will be able to visit her at the WNC Nature Center – Asheville’s Wildlife Park!

The Friends of the WNC Nature Center (www.wildwnc.org) will also be joining in the fun evening activities. The owners of Asheville Wild Birds Unlimited are longtime supporters of this local nonprofit whose mission is to create awareness and provide financial resources, through fundraising and events, in support of the WNC Nature Center. Donations will be accepted in support of the Friends and the WNC Nature Center.

Falconry, known as the sport of kings, is the latest addition of experiences available at Curtis Wright Outfitters (www.curtiswrightoutfitters.com). Jeff Curtis is a licensed falconer with a passion for this ancient art, and he loves to share it with others. Jeff explains, “There is nothing like handling and flying a bird of prey and seeing these magnificent creatures up close.”

Special thanks to the Sunshine Institute (www.sunshineinstitute.org) for providing space for the program. The Sunshine Institute’s mission is to offer compassionate care and integrative intelligence to all those who would benefit. They strive to focus on traditionally under-served populations, believing that the benefits of natural health care extend well beyond the luxurious spa setting.
