Reasonably Priced Babies (RPB) is a formidable improv comedy group consisting of Tom Chalmers, Karen Stobbe, Mondy Carter, Josh Batenhorst and with Aaron Price on the piano. RPB is a multimedia show that starts fast and keeps you laughing – these five players seem like hundreds. Drawing on over 100 years of combined improv experience from across the USA, Reasonably Priced Babies came together to push the envelope of ridiculous fun. You can be part of the experience by catching their monthly show at the Altamont Theatre on Church Street.
Reasonably Priced Babies biographies:
Josh Batenhorst is a local theatre artist, educator and consultant. His work has included acting, directing and designing on numerous local stages including NC Stage, Asheville Community Theatre, and Bright Star Touring Theatre. As an educator and educational consultant with ArtSpace Charter School and A+ Schools of the NC Arts Council, he has developed methods and techniques for using improv and theatre as a technique for engaging students and making classrooms more conducive to learning. He is a board member of the Asheville Area Arts Council where he advocates for a thriving arts culture in and around Asheville.
Mondy Carter played for ComedySportz in Milwaukee and had his own notorious improv group there: The Dead Alewives. He has written plays and (very odd) musicals and comics. He regularly performs all over the country with his wife (Karen Stobbe) in their two person show: Sometimes Ya Gotta Laugh. It’s a show about Alzheimer’s, caregiving and keeping your sense of humor.
Tom Chalmers is a former performing company member and Artistic Director of Groundlings East/Gotham City Improv. He has also studied and worked with Second City, The Upright Citizens Brigade, and Improv Olympic with icon Del Close. Tom currently heads up the Asheville School of Improv at NYS3 and is an Adjunct Theatre Professor at Warren Wilson College. Tom hosts a monthly storytelling series called Listen to This and co-hosts a sports talk radio show on 103.3 AshevilleFM called Steve Sax Syndrome.
Karen Stobbe years ago discovered the guidelines for improv comedy are almost the same as good caregiving guidelines for people with Alzheimer’s. She was acting, directing and doing improv when her father was diagnosed with the disease. Reading all she could on it she saw the improv Alzheimer’s connection. You may have heard her story on This American Life or watched her and her husband (Mondy) do their TEDMED talk. Along with performing with Reasonably Priced Babies Karen does keynotes and intensives on person directed caregiving and was one of the primary sources for The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services guidelines on person centered care.
