Best of show goes to Annie Kramer at the Art League of Henderson County Fall Member Show

Winners of The Art League of Henderson County 2016 Fall Member Art Show were announced at a reception at the Opportunity House, 1411 Asheville Highway, on Sunday, November 13. The Best of Show was presented to Annie Kramer for her acrylic painting, “Beginnings.” Kramer’s painting was entered in the Landscape category and depicted a semi-abstract rendition of a bird’s nest.

A variety of styles and media were entered in the exhibit which was judged by award-winning Western North Carolina watercolorist Pamela Haddock. Haddock has worked in watercolor as well as other media for over 25 years. She also conducts workshops along with producing a prolific portfolio of original artwork. She is a member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, Blue Ridge Watermedia Society, and Jackson County Visual Arts Association.

Other winners were:

Abstract: First Place – “Morning Garden” by Linda McElvey; Second Place – “Deeply Rooted” by Kathy Vorbrich; Third Place – “Imagine” by Nolleen Kelly; and Honorable Mention – “Starlight” by Maxine Tatreau.

Landscape: First Place – “River View” by Gloria Elasky; Second Place – “Storm Arising” by Clair Delong Taylor; Third Place – “Autumn Confetti” by Darlyne Hayes; and Honorable Mention – “At the Dock” by Marion Moore.

Still Life/Floral: First Place – “Near the Hunter’s Camp” by Kay Gordon; Second Place – “Come Blow Your Horn by John Anderson; Third Place – “Peppermint Flowers” by Nancy Smeltzer.

People/Animals: First Place – “Esperanza” by Alex Hall; Second Place – “Moe-Moe” by Kathy Amspacher; Third Place – “unconditional Love” by Jonah Isserman; and Honorable Mention – “Reaching New Heights” by Beverly Kies.

In addition to the category awards, prizes were also given for The Mary Robinson Memorial Award (Best Pastel) which was presented to Suzanne Nelson for “Giverny Pond.” The Richard Kaiser Memorial Award for Best Watercolor was won by Kathy Gagnon for “It’s a Jungle Out There.” The Award for Best Oil or Acrylic went to Sharon Eng for her abstract “Incoming.” Members voted for the Viewer’s Choice Award at the reception and the winner was Kathy Amspacher’s “Moe-Moe.”

Cash prizes for the show winners were provided by sponsors The Starving Artist; Beverly-Hanks Realtors; Art Mob Marketplace and Studios; The Gallery at Flat Rock; the estate of Mary Robinson, a former member of the ALHC; and John Anderson for the Richard Kaiser Memorial Award. The Award for Best Oil/Acrylic was provided by an anonymous donor.

The 2016 ALHC Member Exhibit will remain on display at the Opportunity House through January 5, 2017. The public is invited to stop by to view the fine art exhibit during Opportunity House business hours. Most of the paintings are for sale.

The Art League is composed of artists of many media and skill sets, as well as those who wish to support the arts in their community. It allows for exchange of ideas, artistic opportunities, and resources. The Art League of Henderson County is open to all who are interested in fine art, both artists and patrons. The next meeting will be Sunday, January 8, at Opportunity House, 1411 Asheville Highway, Hendersonville, NC. (There is ample on-site and handicapped-accessible parking.) A social time begins at 1:30 pm, with a short business meeting beginning at 2 pm. An art related presentation then follows until 4 pm. Guests are welcome.
