Buncombe County Democrats tap King for November ballot

To fill a ballot vacancy for this November’s election, the Democratic Party District 3 Executive Committee, made up of Precinct Chairs and Vice Chairs who live across District 3, met on Saturday morning to decide on a candidate.

From Buncombe County Democratic Party:

STATEMENT FROM DAVID KING REGARDING HIS APPOINTMENT TO RUN FOR ONE OF TWO DISTRICT 3 SEATS ON THE BUNCOMBE COUNTY COMMISSION

I am extremely honored and proud to be appointed by the Buncombe County Democratic Executive Committee from District 3 to run for the seat left open by the resignation of one of the two commissioners representing District 3. I am delighted to be running alongside my friend and colleague Ed Hay, already vying for the other District 3 seat on the County Commission.

It is especially gratifying to have earned the confidence of the Democratic Executive Committee for District 3 since I previously served the County as a Republican.

While serving in that role, my eyes were opened to needs I had never personally experienced‐‐‐ such as hunger, inequality, homelessness, and domestic violence. It became evident to me just how much people matter when making decisions….and the need for policies and leaders who put people first.

Politically, I’ve always identified myself as a moderate. As a Commissioner, I always felt it was important to listen to all sides, and make decisions based on what was best for our community and its people, not out of political expediency. Decisions that brought quality jobs so our people could put food on the table and provide for their families’ needs. Decisions that bolstered schools, so our kids and community would thrive and our teachers feel valued. Decisions that protected public safety, and preserved our beautiful mountains so we would have clean air and water for posterity.

During my previous service as Commissioner, it became apparent to me that while Republicans seem to focus on opposition and ideology, Democrats focus on bringing people together to find solutions. Clearly, my goals and values were, and are, better aligned with the Democratic Party of which I am a proud member.

It is time for District 3 to have Commissioners who listen to all sides; who recognize both the opportunities and the challenges we face as a county; and who understand the importance of putting people first. I welcome the opportunity to serve.

Sigh. Even headlines about local politics can’t escape our self proclaimed “Beer City” ego trip.

Swap “democratic” and “republican” around in that press release, and you have the 2010 version of David King, who later defended Tim Moffitt against Brian Turner’s charges.

An ego is a prerequisite for office seekers.
