From the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office:
In a new partnership, the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office, Pisgah Legal Services, Legal Aid of North Carolina, and the N.C. Justice Center will join forces Wednesday, July 8 at 10:00 a.m. at Pack Memorial Library in downtown Asheville to host Buncombe County’s first District Attorney sponsored expunction clinic.
In North Carolina, an expunction is the destruction of a criminal record by court order.
Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams said, “Many are barred from employment, public benefits and other rights and opportunities due to a single blemish on their criminal record. Expunging these records will increase job opportunity and income security for our community. Ultimately, it’s our hope that this clinic will enhance public safety for us all.”
The clinic is designed to erase certain criminal records of those who are eligible for an expunction under North Carolina law.
Wednesday’s clinic at Pack Library is open to all who pre-registered and were provided appointment times for the clinic.
An informational workshop about expunction eligibility and procedure will also be held on Wednesday, July 8 at Pack Library at 6:30 p.m. Those unable to complete a screening for the clinic may attend the workshop.
