Press release from Catholic Committee of Appalachia:

“Mountain Strong: Resilient and Sustainable” is the theme of the Catholic Committee of Appalachia (CCA) annual gathering of members and friends to be held September 15-27, 2017 at YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, NC. Presenters include storyteller David Novak, Eastern Band of Cherokee members Rev. Dr. Ben Bushyhead and Juanita Wilson, Ethnobiologist Marc Williams, Environmental Advocate Connie Mitchell, Nurse Herbalist Vicki Ransom, Community Advocate Dylan Ryan-Hamilton, Climatologist Deke Arndt, Dr. Ellen Kazmareck, Geriatric Physician and Sheila O’Conner, Occupational Therapist.

A general assembly will be held Friday evening for reports, nominations for board members and other business. Saturday evening the Bishop Sullivan Award will be given to an individual and the FOCIS (Federation of Communities in Service) Award will be given to an organization exemplifying commitment to Appalachia and the social and ecological concerns of the area. The gathering will conclude with Sunday morning Mass.

Since 1970, CCA has served Appalachia, her people who have been made poor, and, later, the entire web of creation. As a membership based organization, CCA is a network of faith-based people raising a prophetic voice for Appalachia and her people. CCA stands in solidarity with people on social and ecological concerns.
