CCBdance Project Presents Free Performances at UNC Asheville
CCBdance Project, a dance company based in Asheville and Abidjan, Ivory Coast, will present an excerpt of a repertory solo work, Kenbe, Amour Colere Folie: Improvisations for Love, with performances at 7 p.m. on Oct. 22 and 23 in UNC Asheville’s Carol Belk Theater. A discussion of the artistic process and the work’s thematic materials will follow the performance. These events are free and open to the public.
The CCBdance Project was co-founded in 2006 by Celia Weiss Bambara, who joined the faculty of UNC Asheville this year as assistant professor of dance and director of the dance minor, and Burkina Faso-born dance and theater artist Christian Bambara. Weiss Bambara currently directs the dance company.
The company aims to promote intercultural understanding and peace through experimental African-based contemporary dance. The company’s work has been performed around the world, including in Chicago, San Francisco, Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and the Ivory Coast. The project has been awarded residencies, grants and partnerships by the US Embassy in Abidjan, the City of Chicago, The Puffin Foundation, The Djerassi Foundation and the Gateway Dance Theatre in Des Moines, Iowa, among others.
Weiss Bambara, a dual citizen of the United States and Burkina Faso, holds a Ph.D. in dance history and theory/critical dance studies from the University of California, Riverside. She has taught Haitian traditional dance, African contemporary dance and improvisation and composition at numerous colleges and dance studios in both the United States and abroad in addition to dance studies and yoga.
