Press release from CIMA:
Compañeros Inmigrantes de las Montañas en Acción, families of those detained, community members and the Sanctuary Network invite you to join us this WEDNESDAY May 23 to hear the stories of relatives of loved ones of detainees in the last round of ICE.
As is already public knowledge, on April 14th, ICE carried out raids in Western North Carolina where 26 people were arrested. During the last weeks, two people affected by the raids have already been deported and the others are waiting for their deportation with fear of returning to a country they have not seen in years and that does not offer the conditions of personal security for them or for their family.
Luis Alberto Roblero Cifuentes, a young dreamer and a DACA recipient is amongst these detained who ICE authorities have denied bond, not giving him a chance to continue his case from outside the detention center. Luis, like many other youth his age, was brought to this country at an early age and accompanied by his parents. How can we deny this youth to stay in a country that he knows no other place to call home?
While uncertainty of what will happen to Luis on his final decision and many others detained, their families are suffering anxiety and despair, not knowing if they will have another change to hug their loved one or to be able to raise a bond of $9,000 or more, for them to be able to continue their case from the outside.
Join us to hear Carlos Ortiz, one of the community members wrongly detained in the recent raids, who was granted bond and has been able to reunite with his family. “Thanks to the support from the community and strength of the families, Carlos’ case is a perfect example of community organizing works and strengthens the community. To not others dehumanize and discriminate members even further,” says Bruno Hinojosa Ruiz of CIMA.
While the uncertainty of not knowing what will be their final destination lies in wait for the detainees, these 26 families are suffering from anguish and despair of not knowing if they will see and embrace their loved ones again.
We invite you to show your sense of solidarity and participate in this Vigil where you will have the opportunity to meet those behind these stories, mothers, wives, children and friends, and how together we can help these families do not disintegrate.
We believe that these men- fathers, brothers, sons- should be reunited with their families and their communities. No human being should be subjected to the treatment and conditions that happen in the Stewart Detention Center.
When: Wednesday May 23rd, 6-8pm
Where: New Creation ICCC (500 7th Ave East Hendersonville NC 28792)
