Comedians Tom Scheve, Jake Sharon, Nick Alexander, Cary Goff, Joe Shelton and Jonathan Samuels will perform a show at The Altamont Theatre tonight, July 30. Live music precedes the performance at 8:30 p.m.; show begins at 9 p.m. The event benefits Mission Children’s Hospital.
“All proceeds raised will be donated to Mission Children’s Hospital,” says Scheve. “My daughter Zoe (now 8, happy and healthy) spent about four months in the NICU at Mission after she was born very prematurely, weighing 1.5 pounds. Thanks to the wonderful staff at Mission, modern medicine, and ice cream after dinner, Zoe is taller than any boy in her class, much to their dismay. I probably owe the U.S., North Carolina and Mission Hospital about a million dollars each for services rendered through that experience, so this is just my small way of not paying that back but doing something else instead.”
Tickets are $7. From the Facebook event:
Also appearing on the show: Nationally touring comedian Jake Sharon, streetwise Jonathan Samuels, Asheville Disclaimer writer Joe Shelton, Asheville comedy legend Cary Goff, Charlotte comedy God Nick Alexander.
There will be music before the 9pm show, compliments of the Carl Schmid gypsy swing band.
Tom Scheve:
Tom Scheve got his start in stand-up comedy at a notorious open mic show: Tomato Tuesdays, in which comedians performed next to a large gong while rowdy audience members threw foam tomatoes (or cigarette lighters) at the comedians and, occasionally, the gong. Tom then spent two years refining his act performing weekly at the world-famous Omni Grove Park Inn Resort for guests from all over the world.
Tom Scheve now regularly performs for audiences of all socio-economic status. He has performed at the Laugh Your Asheville Off comedy festival, Cape Fear Comedy Festival, Scruffy City Comedy Festival and was a finalist in the 2013 Rocky Top Comedy Competition, and is regularly a featured performer at shows around the region. He has performed in comedy clubs, theaters, resorts, residential mental health facilities, dive bars, and strip clubs, as well as for church groups, children, recovering drug addicts and active drug addicts.
Tom produces Asheville Disclaimer, an award-winning, weekly satirical feature in the alt-weekly Mountain Xpress. You can find his work at www.tomscheve.com.
Along with comedian Cary Goff, Tom has produced hundreds of shows under the “Disclaimer Comedy” banner, in addition to producing since 2010 the popular weekly show in downtown Asheville, Disclaimer Stand-up lounge.
Tom has a background in newspaper publishing (Washboard Weekly and Asheville Disclaimer) and newspaper reading. Tom is a contributing writer to HowStuffWorks.com. He has written for Cracked, Discovery, the Las Vegas Mercury, and many other publications. Tom studied English and journalism at the University of Georgia, though you’d hardly know it from looking at his academic transcript. He’s been performing stand-up comedy since 2009, and you’d know it from looking at his academic transcript.
Tom Scheve is a prolific joke writer, and some of those jokes can be read on twitter at https://twitter.com/TomScheve
