At its April 18 meeting, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners recognized April as Second Chance Month with a proclamation. Second Chance Month recognizes the agencies and individuals who support the safe and successful reentry of millions of people returning from incarceration each year. In 2022, the Buncombe County Re-entry Council serviced approximately 220 residents returning from incarceration, with 147 people securing full-time permanent employment.
In new business, the Board authorized the Parks & Recreation department to proceed with any due diligence required for the establishment of the Deaverview Mountain property as a park or preserve. Currently, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy is seeking state and federal funding to conserve the property. For more information about the proposed project, click here. “It is a really unique opportunity to preserve such a unique piece of property so close to the Asheville Metropolitan area,” said Board Chair Brownie Newman. “I think it will be greatly loved by people for generations to come.”
The Board also approved a resolution to remove the Enka Intermediate School property from its obligation as security for a deed of trust. Once this partial release is executed and recorded, the County will deed the Enka Intermediate property to the Buncombe County Board of Education, which in turn will convey the fire substation to Enka Candler Fire & Rescue.
The Board of Commissioners also approved a budget amendment of $9,988,616 for Fund 342 (Solid Waste) for the closure of the transfer facility project. Project savings are $18,167.
