Dec. 15 deadline for Jan. 1 ACA health insurance coverage

Press release from Pisgah Legal Services:

Close to 5.5 million people have selected an Affordable Care Act (ACA) health plan nationwide on Healthcare.gov since the start of Open Enrollment on November 1. North Carolina has more than 300,000 enrollments so far, and locally nonprofit Pisgah Legal Services is busy helping people review their options and sign up for health insurance for free.

“In the past week alone, Pisgah Legal trained staff and volunteer navigators served 186 people and secured more than $800,000 in premium tax credits,” said Pisgah Legal Services COO Jaclyn Kiger. “Local people are taking advantage of this free service, new savings for families, and many are finding low-cost comprehensive health insurance.”

An important deadline is approaching: People who need health insurance starting January 1, must sign up for a plan through Healthcare.gov by December 15. If they miss this deadline, Open Enrollment continues until Jan. 15, 2023, but their coverage will be delayed.
