Press release from the Town of Tryon:
The 19th season of Tryon’s most popular summer event – Summer Tracks – continues on Friday, August 17 with Delta Moon. All shows begin at 7 p.m. In case of rain, the concerts will move across the street inside the spacious Tryon Fire Dept. A full schedule, including performer bios and photos, can be found at www.summertracks.com.
Delta Moon plays deep roots music. The whisky-flavored voice of lead vocalist Tom Gray delivers 21st century lyrics that wind around the unshakable groove of slide guitarist Mark Johnson. Winners of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2003, the band’s music has been featured on Showtime, Lifetime, the Food Network and other TV. Gray, a songwriter, was named The Roots Music Association’s 2008 Songwriter of the year and penned Cyndi Lauper’s hit “Money Changes Everything,” among many other songs. They’re described by Downbeat as “a musical atmosphere of swampland sultriness…impressive.” Their use of slide guitars has been described as “magical” for Blues Matters (UK).
Delta Moon tours extensively in the United States, Canada and Europe. Their 2015 release, Low Down, reached #2 on the Roots Music Report’s Contemporary Blues Chart and was named one of the Best Albums of 2015 by both DownBeat and Blues Music Magazine. Their latest album, Cabbagetown (2017) — named for one of the band’s favorite Atlanta neighborhoods —has received enthusiastic audience response.
Delta Moon is Tom Gray; lead vocals, lap steel guitar, guitar and keyboards, Mark Johnson; vocals, guitar, mandoguitar and lap steel guitar, Franher Joseph; vocals, electric and upright bass and Marlon Patton; drums and percussion. “Delta Moon is deep blues with a fury…. Hot stuff!” — Vintage Guitar. More info can be found at www.deltamoon.com.
All Summer Tracks concerts are free, though a voluntary donation at the gate is encouraged. Audience donations along with the generous presenting sponsorship of New View Realty, concert sponsor M.S. Hammett Construction, LLC and many local businesses and individuals make these shows possible. Katie D’s N.Y. Bagels & Deli will be offering for sale a variety of slider & wrap sandwiches, pimento cheese and crackers, plus a variety of desserts including brownies, cookies and ice cream. Water and soft drinks will be for sale, plus alcohol consumption is allowed in the park but is not for sale.
Summer Tracks is produced by the Town of Tryon in affiliation with Peter Eisenbrown of Blockparty Productions. For more information about Summer Tracks and the performers, visit www.summertracks.com.
