Evergreen Community Charter School receives $5,000 contribution for racial equity initiatives

Press release from Evergreen Community Charter School:

$5,000 contribution from the Truist Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Truist Financial Corporation, will support Evergreen Community Charter School’s long standing efforts to dismantle systemic racism.

The funds benefit Evergreen’s Racial Equity Workshop Initiative—an endeavor that provides students, teachers, parents, and community members an opportunity to participate in meaningful and intentional dialogue around the concept of race. The trainings complement Evergreen’s three-year strategic plan to increase diversity and inclusion both in the classroom and in school staff. Nevertheless, the foundation’s generosity feels all the more vital coming during the surge of activism in support of Black Lives Matter.

“During this time of uprising and momentum, we will continue to be intentional and strategic in how we move our work forward,” says Dr. Susan Mertz, Executive Director of Evergreen. “The Truist Foundation’s support will help us in creating greater understanding, doing some deep analysis, and then moving toward actions to disrupt and dismantle systemic racism.”

Patricia Spurio, an Evergreen parent and co-chair of the school’s Equity Leadership Team, adds that the goal is to create “a truly safe space for families of color in which all children can engage, learn, contribute, and grow.”

The Truist Foundation is committed to Truist Financial Corporation’s purpose to inspire and build better lives and communities. The foundation supports nonprofits to help ensure communities have more opportunities for a better quality of life. Grants and activities focus on leadership development, economic mobility, thriving communities, and educational equity.
