Financial literacy workshop for Hall Fletcher Elementary students

Press release form Junior Achievement:

On Thursday October 15th, employees from Self Help Credit Union will be doing what they do best, educating the community about money from a true non-profit perspective. Volunteering at Hall Fletcher Elementary through Junior Achievement (8am – 12pm), employees will be working directly with youth on the topics of financial literacy, workforce readiness, and entrepreneurship.

Hall Fletcher Elementary School is home to over 400 students, the majority (70%) who come from low- income homes. Many parents are not comfortable talking about financial literacy with their children and this topic is not always included in NC Common Core curriculum. It is, however, an essential life skill and one that non-profit Junior Achievement has been teaching for youth K-12 since 1919.

“Our mission is to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity for all. It is with great pleasure and excitement that Self Help will be engaging with youth at Hall Fletcher Elementary on National Credit Union Day, when 200 million credit union members across the globe celebrate the credit union’s movement improving the financial lives of our communities,” says Self-Help Development Manager Esteve Coll-Larrosa.

Junior Achievement of Western North Carolina has served over 100,000 youth in sixteen counties over the past 40 years teaching financial literacy and life lessons that are often not taught in schools or at home. “Our youth are facing unprecedented challenges as they enter the workforce saddled with debt and uncertainty. It is our responsibility to educate them about smart financial practices so that they can be confident about the choices they make and have the tools they need to be successful in a global economy,” says Junior Achievement Regional Director Robin Payne.
