Announcement from Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays:
Representatives from several local gay-straight alliances (GSAs) will participate on a LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) youth panel for the March 7 meeting of the Flat Rock-Hendersonville Chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays).
The meeting is 7:00 – 8:30 pm and will be held in the Education Building of Providence Baptist Church, 1201 Oakland Street, Hendersonville, NC. The meeting is free and open to the public, as are all of the regular meetings which are the first Monday of each month.
Representatives from the Pride Club at Hendersonville High School, the Gay-Straight Alliance at East Henderson High School, and PRiSM at Blue Ridge Community College are scheduled to participate. Some of the questions to be addressed include:
- How are LGBTQ students treated by straight students?
- How are LGBTQ students treated by teachers and staff?
- What is dating like for LGBTQ students?
- What was it like starting a GSA at your school?
- What was it like for you the first time you attended a GSA meeting?
- What can adults – like PFLAG members – do to help you feel more comfortable and supported?
“Our members are eager to learn more about what it’s like being a LGBTQ student in Henderson County,” said chapter president Jerry Miller. “We are eager to support these youth and their advisers and to help make Henderson County schools safer and more welcoming for LGBTQ students.”
