BREVARD, N.C. (Aug. 17, 2017) – The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is offering a free “Leader Building” workshop for fly fishing anglers of all skill levels at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education on Aug. 25.
The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is open to participants 12 and older. Under the direction of the center’s fly-fishing instructors, participants will learn how to choose the weight and length of leaders, as well as when and under what conditions to use a certain leader, for more effective fly fishing. Participants will construct both furled and hand-tied leaders that they can take home with them. All materials are provided.
“The fly fishing leader, along with the tippet, is a nearly transparent transition from the end of your fly line to your fly, and selecting the right leader in terms of weight and size, and under what conditions, is as essential as selecting the right fly,” said Lee Sherrill, program coordinator at the Pisgah Center. “This workshop is ideal for both novice fly-fishing anglers, as well as those who want to learn more about this important, yet often overlooked aspect of fly fishing.”

The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is located near Brevard, just south of Asheville, by the Davidson River in Transylvania County. The center features nature trails and five large aquariums representing aquatic mountain habitats. The center is adjacent to the Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery, where trout are raised in 54 raceways. The center is open Monday through Saturday from April through November and Monday through Friday from December through March. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
