Grant Millin has formally announced his 2022 Asheville city council campaign. The kind of solutions needed at city hall do not appear with a snap of one’s fingers. It took the amount of time it took me to really assess, once again, where city hall seems to be at these days. The upsides of change with City of Asheville (COA) can be celebrated. I have also been checking for anything really new that incumbent and other challenger candidates seem to be saying in contrast to what I’m hearing from a range of Asheville citizen voices and seeing in the news.
Also, when a challenger council candidate sends out their press release in the primary period, that is one of the few opportunities there are to share a competitive agenda. That can happen as those discerning Asheville citizens who are still making their way to the ballots are making final decisions.

I mention that it took me longer than I wanted to get the content on GrantMillin.com close to the way I wanted and I wanted to formally announce at that point; but the title of that press release is “What’s happening to Public Safety Strategy at Asheville’s city hall?” So different message entirely than what MX staff chose.

Graphics won’t get you there, my friend. Show up in the community. Write passionate/thoughtful op-eds. Rail against injustice. Protect long-time citizens from overdevelopment and the myriad effects of catering to too many transplants and tourists without proper infrastructure in place. Feed and clothe the unhoused. I’ve written over 100 commentaries and LTTEs; mostly commentaries and mostly in the Citizen-Times. I can assure you I have participated in hundreds of civic events over many, many years. I lot of that is City of Asheville related. I toured downtown extensively during the primary and attended several civic events, most recently the Black AVL Wall Street event.
The council primary candidates were very selectively covered by media. I am happy I came up with my #MakeAshevilleFutureReady message in spite of everything. In the end I had no regrets as to offering a major message about our future.
