Green Opportunities Seeks Industry Partners in Asheville for GO Build Construction Trades Training Program
Green Opportunities (GO), a non-profit job training organization based in Asheville, NC, will host a “Friend-Raiser” on Wednesday, May 18 from 6:30-8:00 PM to introduce its newly launched GO Build training program to members of Asheville’s construction and home-building community. The event is co-sponsored by Carolina Jews for Justice and will be held at the Asheville Jewish Community Center, located at 236 Charlotte Street, Asheville, NC 28801.
The nine-month GO Build training and apprenticeship program prepares low-income residents of Asheville with the nationally recognized credentials, industry driven on-the- job training, and essential employability-skills training needed to secure employment in the building trades. GO’s upcoming training cohort of approximately 30 students will begin in August 2016.
GO is currently seeking industry partners, including homebuilders, developers, city planners, and community partners to serve in an advisory capacity as they roll-out the program.
“GO has always been a place for those who need a second chance to get valuable skills and support to launch new careers. This event will help us further this mission by going straight to the industry leaders and training for the specific jobs and opportunities available now and in the future to ensure that our local workforce remains vibrant,” said Doug Sharkey, Lead Trainer for GO Build.
Attendees at the May 18 event will learn about the pool of skilled local talent being trained through the GO Build program, as well as how the GO Build program can help builders and contractors meet their local hiring requirements. GO seeks to identify niches in Asheville’s construction community that could be filled by its workforce through tailored training that best serves the industry’s needs.
Sharkey shares, “This event is going to be a great opportunity for leaders in the building industry to learn about the exciting work that GO Build is doing and how we can collectively help create the new workforce for our community.”
Previously, Green Opportunities trained workers for the renovation of the Arthur R. Edington Education & Career Center (formerly the Reid Center), located in Asheville’s Southside neighborhood. GO’s trained workforce has completed local carpentry projects for private landowners, including fences, pergolas and outdoor seating areas. The program also operates an in-house fine woodworking studio, Southside Woodworks, which employs students in the production of kitchen essentials, garden beds, and custom furniture.
