Story from The Mountaineer:
When Deputy Ryan Smith with the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office signed up for the K-9 unit, he never imagined he’d have to learn German.
“There’s also homework,” said Smith, laughing, who, along with his dog, Reno, is the newest K-9 team with the department.
The new addition has been welcomed by the department. Reno and Smith have been out on the road since Nov. 1 and have already been put to the test. The team is the second with the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office along with fellow K-9 Deputy Randy Jenkins and his dog, Lenny.
Reno is a black German Shepherd, who was purchased from the Czech Republic. German is a common language used in training police and military dogs. For Smith and Jenkins, it’s just part of the job.
