Press release via Buncombe County Government
Some Buncombe County voters will have additional candidates on their ballot for upcoming elections. The North Carolina General Assembly passed House Bill 400 on Nov. 30, 2021, that changes the Asheville City Board of Education from an appointed Board to a Board with elected members and increases the membership of that Board from five to seven members.
Candidate filing for these new positions starts Monday, Dec. 6 and runs through Friday, Dec. 17. Four seats will be open in 2022 and three more in 2024. There are two notable things to keep in mind for local voters. For the 2022 election a primary will only be held if 5 or more people file, and Asheville City Schools district and the City of Asheville districts do NOT coincide. Asheville City School district is much smaller and even incorporates some county areas. Buncombe County Election Services is available for questions at (828) 250-4200.
