Local athlete wins at virtual State Senior Games finals

Press release from the City of Asheville:

David Shepard earned some hardware at the recent North Carolina State Senior Games.  A resident of Black Mountain, he planned to compete in the Asheville-Buncombe Senior Games as a qualifier for state competition; but when COVID-19 forced cancellation of the local games and in-person state games, state level competition was held virtually.  In this year’s statewide virtual games, Shepard earned 13 Gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze medal across events in 10 categories.

Approximately 850 athletes and artists participated in this year’s virtual State Finals, which included competition by age and gender for medals, a fitness raffle and the opportunity for fellowship with other participants statewide.

The Asheville-Buncombe Senior Games are produced by Asheville Parks & Recreation in partnership with the YMCA and Black Mountain Parks & Recreation.  Local games are currently scheduled to be held in spring of 2021 and will serve as a qualifying event for the state finals next year.
