Mac DeMarco sounds a bit sad about a lady. “Must be another one she loves,” he laments on repeat during recent song “Another One” — the title track from his latest mini album. That’s after he’s unveiled someone’s increasingly apprehensive perspective on an existing relationship. Perhaps he’s just inquiring for a friend, but DeMarco’s weary vocals hint otherwise, as do some of his recent song titles: “A Heart Like Hers,” “I’ve Been Waiting For Her,” “No Other Heart,” etc. A timeless topic has become his muse.
Despite the content, DeMarco’s songs don’t sound sappy. His spaced-out guitar and synths plus a distant, almost strung-out voice save the day: Instead of whining, the singer/songwriter is providing one man’s observations of love’s complex — and sometimes desperation-inducing — nature. After all, words can only sound so sad when they’re delivered alongside slow, ear-warping guitar effects and a decidedly retro aesthetic.
The twenty-five year old musician is touring in support of these latest love(less) tunes, and he stops into Asheville for a set at the Orange Peel on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 9 p.m. Click here for show information.
