Mark Matheny to serve as Director of Development Services

Press release from City of Asheville:

Asheville City Manager Debra Campbell is pleased to announce that Mark Matheny, who has been serving as the Interim Director of Development Services since November 3, 2022, has accepted the position of Development Services Director.

Mark will oversee a department of 54 professional staff providing a high level of customer service in support of a safe and resilient community.

“We are confident that in this role Mark will continue to build on the strengths of the staff and the positive working relationships that DSD has with other City departments and the community,” Assistant City Manager Ben Woody said.

Mark started with the City in 2007 as a Plan Reviewer. Since then he has held the titles of Plan Review Supervisor, Building Division Manager, and Chief Building Official.  He has led a number of notable projects that have improved the efficiency of the development review process, including managing the transformation of the DSD to a fully digital application, review, and permitting process.

“I’m very excited to have been selected as the Director of the Development Services Department. The development industry is a lifetime passion for me and being able to facilitate the conduit between government and the development community is truly an honor.  I’m surrounded by a team with integrity and professionalism and we’re looking forward to continuing the great work that’s been done previously and finding areas to continually improve,” Matheny stated.
