“Eat and Greet Italiano”
An Insider’s Guide to Italy

Join us for a vicarious trip through four winemaking regions in Italy hosted by Mark Smith of Private Italy and The Asheville School of Wine. “Eat and Greet Italiano” will meet on four Tuesdays, January 19th and 26th and then February 9th and 16th @MetroWines. Each session will be held from 6:30 to 8:30pm.

Mark Smith of Private Italy will guide us as only an insider can through the culture and the language. “Our Metro Program, An Insider’s Guide to Travel in Italy, will showcase the four winemaking regions in Italy focusing on regional culture, some helpful Italian to assist in more easily making your way, unique sites to visit and, of course, wine and cheese! Each class will offer tastings of two regional wines, a white and a red, that typify the oenological vintages of those regions with commentary by The Asheville School of Wine,” says Mark. Join us for what will be an enjoyable and informal introduction to bella Italia!

The four winemaking regions include: Veneto, Piedmont, Umbria and Tuscany, Campagna and Sicily.

About Mark Smith:

Mark Gordon Smith spent his early childhood in Tuscany while his father was stationed at the port of Livorno along the Tuscan coast. He is a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point. In 2001, he moved to Florence Italy for three months and wrote his first book, Tuscan Echoes, A Season Italy. Last Season of the Lira and Tuscan Light, Memories of Italy followed in 2005 and 2008.

He is currently working on his second novel which takes place during the Renaissance in Florence.

Mark has lead innumerable classes on Travel in Italy, Conversational Italian and Art and History of Renaissance Florence at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach and Pawley’s Island, SC and at Brunswick Community College near Wilmington, NC.

He has been privileged to study Renaissance Florentine art and history at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence (The Academy of Fine Arts). Research for his books has provided opportunities to work directly with the staff of Alessandra Marino, the Soprintendenza BAPSAE (Beni Architettonici, Paesaggistici, Storici, Artistici ed Etnoantropologici) in Florence who has provided access to rarely known treasures across Florence.
