ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Nov. 12, 2013) – Mission Hospital’s Heart Services has been named one of the nation’s Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics, a leading authority on clinical quality. Mission Hospital, based in Asheville, N.C., was the only hospital in the Carolinas to receive this recognition.

The Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals spent roughly $2,000 less per bypass surgery and about $1,000 less per heart attack patient admitted, according to Truven Health Analytics. These top hospitals were also quicker to release their patients: a half day better than their peers for heart attack, heat failure and angioplasty cases, and a full day sooner for bypass patients.

If all cardiovascular providers in the U.S. performed at the level of Mission Hospital and the other top 50 hospitals, more than:
· 8,600 additional lives could be saved
· $1 billion could be saved
· 3,200 additional bypass and angioplasty patients could be complication free

The study evaluated general and applicable specialty, short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals treating a broad spectrum of cardiology patients.

Truven Health Analytics researchers analyzed 2011 and 2012 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, 2012 Medicare cost reports and 2013 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare data. They scored hospitals in key performance areas: risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures (a group of measures that assess process of care), percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, 30-day mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost.

Mission Hospital offers the latest in prevention, diagnosis and treatment for even the most complex diseases of the heart. Mission Hospital’s heart services recently received the American College of Cardiology Foundation’s Platinum Performance Achievement Award for the second consecutive year.
