New York-based roots rock outfit Esquela will play a free show at Straightaway Café of Black Mountain on Thursday, April 30, at 7 p.m.
“War, politics, relationships and the banalities of everyday life, provide fodder for the band’s original songwriting,” reads Esquela’s website, “while a talented and passionate group of musicians wrap those lyrics in a roots-rock-Americana sound that both beguiles and charms its listeners.”
The band will release their third album Obey the Party later this year.

New York roots rock quintet, Esquela, will be in Black Mountain on Thursday, April 30, to deliver a special performance at Straightaway Cafe (1722 NC Hwy 9). Showtime is 7 p.m., and there will be no cover charge for this event.
Esquela features the acclaimed duo of vocalist Rebecca Frame and guitarist Brian Shafer, as well as front-man John “Chico” Finn (bass, vocals), Todd Russell (drums, vocals), and Matt Woodin (guitar). The quintet independently released its sophomore album ‘Are We Rolling?’ in 2013, earning the group international accolades, and airplay. ‘Rolling’ was produced, recorded, and mixed by Americana/rock legend and Grammy winner, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, who has produced and recorded the likes of Ryan Adams, The Bottle Rockets, Robert Randolph and Steve Wynn, among many others. Esquela completed the recording of their follow-up (3rd) album, “Obey the Party,” with Ambel late last year, over a November weekend. The band plans for Obey to be released later this year.
Esquela is looking forwarding to hitting the road this spring, and in coming months. Known for delivering enthralling, festive performances, the band has shared the stage with artists like The Bottle Rockets, Dan Baird and Homemade Sin, Whitey Morgan and the 78’s, Marah, Steve Wynn, Jason Ringenberg, and Eric ‘Roscoe’ Ambel. Other Esquela tour stops this spring include Exit/In, and The Sutler Saloon (both in Nashville), Parlay Social (Lexington), and Midtown Live (NYC).
