Press release from North Carolina State AFL-CIO:
MEDIA ADVISORY: North Carolina Labor Movement Hosts Public Hearing in Asheville on Local Impact of Federal Funding and Jobs Cuts
U.S. Sen Thom Tillis and other elected officials invited to hear federal workers and community members discuss how slashes to federal agencies have impacted them
ASHEVILLE – On Thursday, April 17 at 5:30 p.m., working families in Asheville are gathering for a public hearing on how cuts to essential federal services and jobs have affected their lives. In North Carolina, there are over half a million veterans, Medicaid covers 37% of babies born here, and tens of thousands of dedicated federal workers call the state home. This means attacks on government agencies by Elon Musk’s DOGE impact our communities directly. Local federal workers, labor leaders, and community members will be in attendance to testify, and U.S. Senator Tillis has been invited to listen to his constituents. This event is one of a series of nationwide hearings being held as part of the AFL-CIO’s Department of People who Work for a Living (DPWL), a union-driven campaign to fight attacks on all working people.
WHO:
- Multiple local federal workers
- Blake Honeycutt, President of Western North Carolina Central Labor Council
- Representative J. Eric Ager, House District 114
- Representative Lindsey Prather, House District 115
- Jen Hampton, Organizer at Just Economics
- Ken Towe, Chaplain at Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 446 Member
WHEN: Thursday, April 17 at 5:30 p.m.
WHERE: AB Tech Ferguson Auditorium – 19 Tech Drive, Asheville, NC 28801
