Acclaimed photographer Barbara Tyroler will lead an abstract photography workshop, Barbara Tyroler – Considering Abstraction with the Camera, in June for Cullowhee Mountain Arts (CMA) on the campus of Western North Carolina University. CMA is a non-profit arts organization and operates its summer programs on the university campus. This photography workshop will complement the array of excellent visual art and creative writing summer workshops that CMA has offered so successfully over the past several years.
The workshop, June 12-17, will explore techniques and strategies to enrich each participant’s visualization skills in the production of abstract or semi-abstract photographic imagery. Tyroler invites artists and photographers of all levels to experience this creative and engaging week.
“This is a full week of creative exploration – we’ll photograph on location, capturing impressionistic images against the beauty of the rural Appalachian landscapes and waterscapes. Each student will use his or her imagination to guide their focus and sharpen their sense of composition and design.” Students will “learn to see through an artist’s perspective, and use the camera as a tool to turn realistic scenery into abstract representation.”
A key component of the workshop is image evaluation and discussion. Tyroler adds, “Critique sessions are a vital part of the week. Facilitated small group sessions sharpen editing skills and inspire stimulating conversations, while individualized sessions allow for personal critique and portfolio development.”

Tyroler invites photographer couples to register as an opportunity to learn together regardless of their degree of expertise. All camera devices are welcome. Workshop participants will use various camera and visualization techniques to create mysterious and multi-layered imagery. Students are encouraged to bring their laptops for daily upload and discussion. In the computer lab there will be opportunity to experiment with image composites or to learn more about various editing software. Each student will select a personal image to take home as a custom fine art print.
Tyroler is an artist, photographer, educator, and community worker. She has served as a photographic educator at the University of Maryland, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, and Duke University, and currently provides private tutorials and portfolio critique. With dual advanced degrees in education and Imaging and Digital arts, Tyroler enriches her classes through skillful group instruction, acquired over a lifetime of teaching. She lives in Chapel Hill, NC.
