Public invited to offer input on Ferry Road land use plan for housing, recreation and more

Press release from Buncombe County:

Your voice can help decide the future of an upcoming mixed-use, mixed-income housing project in Buncombe County. Buncombe County owns a 137-acre tract of land adjacent to the French Broad River and Pisgah National Forest and will use it to increase affordable housing opportunities, a priority that aligns with our 2025 Strategic Plan and community feedback. Speaking of input, the Ferry Road Project survey only takes about five minutes to complete and will provide valuable insight on the future of this property.

Later this year, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners will decide between five potential scenarios for the County-owned land, and community input is an important part of that process. To have your voice heard, please take a moment to be part of this process by taking our Ferry Road Project survey.

Buncombe County is also hosting a virtual meeting about potential plans for Ferry Road that will feature a Q&A session and opportunity for feedback. That virtual meeting is March 3 from5-7 p.m., and you can register here. Again, please make sure to take our survey here, and learn more about the project’s potential options and other County projects at our Engage Buncombe public input portal.

About the Ferry Road Project

The overall goal is to create mixed-use, mixed-income housing while preserving as much of the land as possible using sustainability principles. The Buncombe County 2025 Strategic Plan emphasizes environmental stewardship, and each of the development concepts features preservation of acreage and the use of additional land tabbed for parks, trails, and other conservation measures.

In addition to environmental stewardship and housing, Commissioners also expressed interest in utilization of the site for a potential early childhood center, health care facilities, and other public-serving amenities that are beneficial for communities. Commissioners noted the Ferry Road project is a chance to set an example for how development can look in Buncombe County and be a place that gives people a sense of pride.
