Tar Heel Junior Historians of Smith-McDowell House win state awards

Asheville, N.C. – The Asheville History Center at Smith-McDowell House is pleased and proud to announce that their SMH over History (Tar Heel Junior Historians Association Chapter) was awarded 2015 History in Action Award and two first place awards in the photography category.  The awards were presented at the state Tar Heel Junior Historians Association Convention on Friday, April 26, 2013 at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh, N.C. The club also led the opening ceremonies with the NC State Toast and the NC State Song, “The Old North State.”

This year’s History in Action Award was sponsored by Coca-Cola. The club wanted to learn to sew. Making a quilt was chosen as a project and it was decided that the quilt would be given to Elizabeth House, a hospice facility in Hendersonville, N.C. They researched the history of the quilt and the research paper was written by member Kailee Ellege, titled “Quilting: The Footprints of America’s Past.” Samantha Wallace wrote the process paper. Members of the club who worked on the project were: Makala and Madelynn Lawrence of Leicester, Samantha Wallace of Asheville, Kailee, Taylor and Carrissa Ellege of Asheville and Celsea Austin of Asheville. This is the club’s third History In Action Award.

Members recognized for their photography were Morgan DeMaar of Weaverville and Lilliann Stockham of Asheville.

Authorized by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1953, THJHA is sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of History, part of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources. The purpose of the association is to encourage North Carolina students in the study of their local communities’ and the state’s histories. Junior historian clubs involve students in grades 4-12.

The Tar Heel Junior Historians SMH over History Chapter is comprised of school age students interested in making history fun and meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Members are considered volunteers of the Center and participate in activities at Smith-McDowell House as hands-on facilitators and also reenact a one room school house at Hart Square in Hickory, NC each year. For more information on joining the club, please contact Advisor Lisa Whitfield at 253-9231 or education@wnchistory.org.
