Press release from Team ECCO:
(May 11, 2018) Hendersonville NC – The Aquarium and Shark Lab of Team ECCO announces plans to have a new baby shark on Wednesday, May 16 at 4 p.m.
We will hatch the baby from its egg, then transfer the young pup (which will still be attached to its yolk sack) into an acrylic grow chamber, suspended in the main tank. While in the chamber, our shark team will monitor length, respiration, eye placement and more.
The pup will remain in the chamber for 2 weeks. After the yolk has been fully absorbed by the pup, we will wait another 5-7 days then release the pup into a special holding enclosure. We will then start handfeeding and imprinting for recognition.
This will be the 5th hatchling and we look for it to be the 3rd successful growth pup, as we lost two previous pups to yolk anomalies and early self hatching. The public is encouraged to attend and witness this amazing event! Regular admission applies.
The Team ECCO Aquarium & Shark Lab is the only ocean education lab and hands-in marine study center in Western North Carolina, Upstate South Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. Our programs include but are not limited to fish ID, marine adaptations, reef/mangrove/grass bed ecology, water quality, turtle rescue, local reptile education and marine bio diversity.
