Press release from UNC Asheville:
UNC Asheville students will bring TEDx talks back to campus on March 26, 2016. Ticket sales start on February 26, and the 100 tickets are expected to sell out quickly. Admission is free, but an RSVP is required.
Speakers will focus on the theme of “The Kids Are Not Alright.”
“Millennials are told that they are both responsible for fixing our planet and that they can’t do anything because they’re glued to their cellphones all the time. With this event, we are hoping to change the reputation that our millennials have and inspire hope not only in them, but in other generations as well,” said Juliet Flam-Ross, a first-year student at UNC Asheville.
The daylong event in the Humanities Lecture Hall will feature the short, powerful lectures that TED and TEDx events are known for, and include voices that range from UNC Asheville students, faculty and staff, to community leaders in planning, housing and religion.
On the agenda for UNC Asheville TEDx 2016:
- Director of the Urban Mentoring Academy, Jazz Cathcart, who is one of the founding pastors at Reach Life Church in downtown Asheville
- UNC Asheville senior Jesse Goldman, who created and facilitates a slackline and mindfulness after-school program
- UNC Asheville sophomore Hailey Johnston, founder of ESCAPE, helping teens and young adults battling cancer.
- City of Asheville Planning Director Todd Okolichany
- UNC Asheville Student Affairs Case Manager Gabby Porcaro
- UNC Asheville Admissions Counselor Brittany Privott
- UNC Asheville Professor of Physics Michael Ruiz
- Burial Beer Company Fermentation Specialist Rachel Simpson
Flam-Ross is joined by a team of students in planning and implementing all aspects of the annual event. TEDx is an independently organized event.

This sounds great
Hello! I just noticed some misinformation in my description, and I am the only founder of ESCAPE. If this could be fixed, I would greatly appreciate it!
Hello Hailey. This is a press release that we re-posted that came directly from UNC Asheville, so there must have been some misinformation within their office. I have edited it to reflect the information that you have passed along. Thanks!
