Teen Bandstand, featuring Asheville Music School Rock Band, Jesse Barry and the Jam.
Back in the day starting a rock band usually meant hours in a garage or basement trying to figure out exactly what was going on in the grooves of those records. Aspiring rockers still go through the ritual, but there are more options, including the Asheville Music School, which sponsors its own rock band. There’s nothing like playing in front of an audience to help a young band sharpen their presentation, and the Asheville Music School Rock Band will do just that on the stage of the White Horse Black Mountain on Sunday, May 29 at 6 p.m.
Since 2009, Music School instructor Alec Fehl, a working musician himself, has mentored teen rock bands and helped them prepare for high-profile shows at venues and Festivals like the Orange Peel Downtown After 5, and LEAF Downtown. The AMS Rock Band class is made up of musicians age 11-17 whose repertoire features everything from 60s psychedelia to 70s punk, 80s New Wave to 90s grunge, as well as original rock arrangements of modern pop hits.
Opening the show will be Jesse Barry and the Jam. By the time she graduated from high school Jesse was already a veteran of clubs and festivals with her band Skinny Legs and All, formed in the middle school jam band class at Evergreen Community Charter School. Now a seasoned performer at age 24, she commands a big, powerful blues/ R&B voice that emerges unexpectedly from her spare frame and takes control of the room.
Show starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $7 advance/$10 door.
