The Village Potters Teaching Center presents the second installment of their 2019 Masters Series Workshop with a one-day demonstration workshop featuring WNC studio potter Michael Kline. The workshop will take place at The Village Potters on Saturday, April 13, 2018 from 10:00am-6:00pm.
Michael Kline makes utilitarian ceramics with botanical-themed painted and stamped surfaces, working primarily with wood-fired, salt-glazed stoneware. His organic patterns are painted on a thick, white slip surface and fired with an alkaline ash glaze. He began making large pots inspired by the traditional stoneware of Catawba Valley and Seagrove during his residency at Penland, and has been equally influenced by a trip to the Freer-Sackler Wing of the Smithsonian where he studied the 15th century examples of the Korean sangam technique, which he applies to his own work and aesthetic, creating floral stamps and inlaying the impressions with white slip on a dark stoneware. This demonstration workshop will include throwing and surface design, as well as brush technique exercises for all attendees.
The Village Potters’ Masters Series Workshop are a part of their Advanced Ceramics Program, and are offered to artists who have been accepted to Independent Study & Mentoring Studio, with a limited number of tickets available to the general public. They comprise an intentional Collective of potters who share a commitment to inspire a passion for ceramic art and nurture creative exploration through education, experience, relationships, and community. The Village Potters includes three showrooms, a Teaching Center offering ongoing classes in wheel and hand building for adults, an Advanced Ceramics Program, and scheduled demonstration and hands-on workshops. The Village Potters is an educational member of The Craft Guild of the Southern Highlands, and is an official distributor for Laguna Clays.
