Press release from event organizers:
Twisted Idol, a karaoke singing competition, returns to Twisted Laurel in downtown Asheville, N.C., with more than $500 in prizes to be given away during the Nov. 3 grand finale. The competition is a partnership between Twisted Laurel (130 College Street) and Asheville’s Get Vocal Entertainment. Get Vocal’s Jason Tarr hosts the event.
For the next two Thursday nights, singers will audition for a place in the finals. Live judges choose the top two singers each week (or top three if there is a tie) to advance to the finals. The winner of the finals will receive $350. Second place will earn $100 and third place will take home $50.
Among the judges this season will be local music star, Lyric, area performer/musician Jason Whitaker and Twisted Idol season one winner, Kia Rice.
Rice, also known as “Virtuous,” used her win of Twisted Idol’s first season to propel her music career forward. At the time of the competition, Rice had been working on a personal independent album but did not have the funds to take her pursuit of music to the next level.
“Truly, this contest was a blessing. I was able to do what I love to do but also be rewarded and use it toward something I needed,” Rice said. “My album, ‘Welcome to Haven’ was released in June 2016. The Twisted Idol prize helped me fund this project and the album has already received great feedback from listeners.”
Her album is now available on iTunes, Amazon MP3, Google Play, CDBaby and streaming sites such as Spotify. She has set up a website, www.virtuousmusic.com for more information.
“You don’t want to miss this chance to be a part of something great,” Rice said. “Come rock the mic, dance it out, and meet other local karaoke lovers!”
To audition, singers need to sign up with host Jason Tarr at Twisted Laurel between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. either this Thursday, October 13 or next Thursday, October 20. Singers will select one song to sing for the judges and live audience. Auditions will begin promptly at 9 p.m. and will conclude by 10 p.m. Those who do not make it through Oct. 13 auditions do have the opportunity to audition again.
