Archaeologist Jared Benton Presents a Talk on Ancient Roman Craftsmen, Nov. 17 at UNC Asheville
Jared Benton, an archaeologist who excavates in Roman Sicily, will present a talk, Expressions of Pride in the Iconography of Roman Craftsmen, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 in UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library in the Whitman Room. This presentation is free and open to everyone.
Benton, assistant professor of art history at Old Dominion University, is field supervisor for the Contrada Agnese Project, part of the American excavations at Serra Orlando in Sicily. That site that has been the subject of archaeological investigation since the early 20th century and is thought to be the location of the ancient city of Morgantina which existed from about 450 B.C. to 50 B.C.
Benton specializes in the art and material culture of sub-elites in the ancient Roman world and has published articles on the craftsmen, bakers and blacksmiths in Roman iconography and archaeology.
