Press release from UNC Asheville:
UNC Asheville has launched a new merit scholarship program to recognize students with exceptional academic accomplishments, demonstrated leadership, and potential to be a pace-setter in their future endeavors in their academic life and future beyond college.
The Chancellor’s Scholarship is funded by the Selby and Richard McRae Foundation through a gift of $250,000. It provides entering students with opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge, and problem solving necessary to pursue their goals and take their places as leaders and engaged citizens in a rapidly changing society.
“The Chancellor’s Scholarship is the premiere academic and leadership scholarship offered at UNC Asheville,” said Chancellor Nancy J. Cable. “University Scholars will actively contribute to the student academic vibrancy and co-curricular engagement of UNC Asheville. We look forward to welcoming these student leaders who will enhance our community as they achieve their highest academic potential through study abroad opportunities, undergraduate research that is self-designed by the students with faculty and staff leaders, and internship experiences.”
The first class of Chancellor’s Scholars will be selected from applicants for the Class of 2024, with five Chancellor’s Scholars chosen through a rigorous selection process. Each Chancellor’s Scholar will receive $10,000 in scholarship support each year for four years. Chancellor’s Scholars also receive an additional $10,000 during their four years at UNC Asheville to support study abroad, undergraduate research, and internships, which are all hallmarks of the original liberal arts and sciences education at UNC Asheville. This scholarship is available for both in-state and out-of-state students.
School counselors or leaders from student’s community may make nominations by January 10. Nominations can be submitted online at: https://avlbound.unca.edu/register/universityscholars2020. To be considered for the Chancellor’s Scholarship, nominees must have completed their application for admission to UNC Asheville no later than January 10, 2020.
Highly capable students selected for the Class of 2024 are likely to have strong academic profiles and be exceptional leaders interested in high-impact, experiential learning opportunities. Selected candidates will be invited to the UNC Asheville campus for interviews with faculty, staff and student leaders as part of University Scholars Day on February 1, 2020. Additional scholarships will also be available as part of the University Scholars Program.
