Press release from the United Way of Transylvania County:
Join the Transylvania County Library and United Way of Transylvania County’s TRAIN for the annual ‘Celebration of Volunteers’ on Tuesday, April 30, from 4-7 p.m. in the library’s Rogow Room. Potential volunteers can chat with representatives of local service organizations and celebrate the contributions of current community volunteers.
“This event is a great opportunity for individuals, families and groups! Businesses, churches, and clubs can talk to agencies about the potential for group projects—one of the most frequent requests we receive through VolunteerTransylvania.org,” said Colin Kirkman, TRAIN Specialist for United Way of Transylvania County.
Transylvania Sheriff Department will cook up free hot dog dinner plates during the celebration, and Brevard Police Department will provide drinks.
“The Friends of the Library have generously donated door prizes for the celebration this year. Participants can travel the room, collecting stamps from each agency, to be eligible for prizes. We hope this will be a fun way for attendees to learn about all the great organizations in Transylvania Count,y and the ways volunteers can have a positive impact in our community,” said Kelly McBride, Community Engagement Specialist for Transylvania County Library.
Governor’s Award Winners
In addition to creating new opportunity matches for volunteers, a short program at 5:30 will honor Transylvania County’s 2019 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award winners.
This year, Allen Haas, Cathie Hargreaves, Paul Hoffman, Tricia Poche, Maureen Sieber, and Connestee Falls Student Scholarship Program were selected by the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service for their valuable volunteer services to the community.
All award-winners were nominated by fellow Transylvania County residents. This state-wide program is offered annually, with the nomination process beginning in the fall of each year.

A ‘Good Fit’ On-line
All agencies participating in the Celebration of Volunteers are also listed on VolunteerTransylvania.org. The free, community-wide website, which lists volunteer opportunities from over 85 local agencies, is provided by United Way of Transylvania County.
Organizations listed on VolunteerTransylvania.org include nonprofit, public, civic and religious organizations. The platform offers a free online presence, visibility, volunteer management, and communication capacities. Organizations seeking more information should contact UnitedWayTRAIN@comporium.net.
Individuals are encouraged to set up their own account. The free personal accounts allow volunteers to respond electronically to specific volunteer opportunities, track their own volunteer hours, and even generate a volunteer resume.
“Creating an account with VolunteerTransylvania.org allows everyone, including people with limited mobility or unusual schedules, to find meaningful volunteer opportunities that fit their schedules, needs and talents,” added Kirkman.
Information for agencies
Due to space limitations, agencies must sign up in advance. To register for a table at the Celebration of Volunteers, agency representatives should go to VolunteerTransylvania.org and look for the blue banner. Participating agencies must have a current page on VolunteerTransylvania.org.
Agency representatives can independently create a page on the VolunteerTransylvania.org after making an individual account on the site. Email unitedwayTRAIN@comporium.net for questions arising during the sign-up process.
