UWHC encourages residents to save money on tax preparation with MyFreeTaxes

Press release from United Way of Henderson County:

As tax season officially gets underway, United Way of Henderson County (UWHC) encourages residents to use MyFreeTaxes to easily and accurately file their federal and state returns. MyFreeTaxes is free for all simple returns.

MyFreeTaxes helps everyone access the free tax filing options for which they are eligible. Simple tax situations covered for free in MyFreeTaxes include: W-2 income, Schedule C Self Employment, unemployment income, claiming the standard deduction, education expenses, credits or student loan interest, Earned Income Tax Credit, child tax credits and child and dependent care expenses.

“MyFreeTaxes can also connect users to products that can help build financial stability including accessible and affordable bank accounts, assistance with student debt challenges and the ability to engage NC 211 to connect with a financial counseling program,” noted UWHC Executive Director Denise Cumbee Long. “MyFreeTaxes can also help filers claim missed stimulus payments, which can have a real impact this year,” she added.

Taxes can be filed easily using a mobile phone, tablet or computer. The MyFreeTaxes.com platform will guide the user through the process to guarantee the maximum refund. Filers who prefer more support can connect to virtual VITA programs to have their return prepared for them by an IRS-certified specialist.

Most filers complete their taxes in under one hour and save an average of $200 in fees by using MyFreeTaxes instead of a paid tax preparer. For more information, visit myfreetaxes.com.
