WCU Nursing Association Raise Funds for Charitable Donation

Students of Western Carolina University’s Accelerated BSN program raised funds through their Association of Nursing Students to help purchase a commercial drier to help Haywood Street Respite Center. Haywood Street Respite Center is a nonprofit organization that provides a safe place for homeless adults to stay on a short-term basis after a hospital stay to finish getting well and connect with needed services and supports.

Haywood Street Respite Center has served 150 people so far this year, with 56 percent experiencing a reduction in hospital utilization in the three months following their stay at HSRC compared to the same time period before their stay. “Your $500 contribution came at just the right time because our dryer had broken the week before!” exclaimed Laura Kirby, Executive Director of the Haywood Street Respite.

We were looking to do something that would really benefit our community in a really tangible and meaningful way” says Lindsay Prestemon, ANS Secretary who spearheaded the project. The project was funded in part by an anonymous donor, she added.

We are happy to be a part of the wellness of our city and proud of all that can be accomplished with a little teamwork and dedication” says Kathryn Kreyling, ANS President. “We worked together to make these projects happen and couldn’t have done it without cooperation from the students and faculty at WCU. It’s challenging but rewarding and we are grateful to have this opportunity.”
