Western Carolina Medical Society holds annual Heartstrings fundraiser, May23-24

From a press release:

Every year WCMS holds its annual Heartstrings fundraiser to help fund the WCMS Foundation. To celebrate its 13th year, Heartstrings is turning up the fun with a weekend Family Fun Event. Heartstrings, presented by Quest Diagnostics, will be held on Saturday May 23rd and Sunday, May 24th at Carrier Park from 11am to 6pm as part of Asheville’s popular Mountain Sports Festival. Family teams will enter the Heartstrings Kid Zone and have the chance to try a variety of delightfully silly challenges like a noodle javelin throw, Frisbee Golf, and an inflatable pony hop. The WCMS Foundation will also be selling raffle tickets for an amazing Asheville “Stay-cation” package during the event.

With a minimum donation of $5 per family, the Heartstrings fundraiser is a super fun and affordable way for families to spend Memorial Day Weekend together. Most importantly, Heartstrings is a great way for the community to support the WCMS Foundation and save lives in our community. WCMS Foundation’s (WCMSF) Project Access® provides nearly 3,000 low- income individuals with the health care they need each year. The groundbreaking program relies on the generosity of a network of over 500 dedicated physician volunteers as well as the financial support of businesses and individuals in the community who ensure that Project Access® continues to operate. WCMSF is also a Certified Application Counselor organization and Project Access® now helps qualified uninsured obtain affordable insurance in the Marketplace.

“Even with the Affordable Care Act, nearly 15% of Buncombe County residents remain uninsured,” said WCMS CEO Miriam Schwarz. “There’s an insurance gap for many of our poorest residents because the State of North Carolina did not expand Medicaid to cover all low-income people. Only certain people qualify for Medicaid right now. So, for example, if you are a self-employed woman without children who makes less than $11,770, you don’t get Medicaid and you don’t qualify for subsidies to help with private insurance. These individuals who got left behind are in need of programs such as WCMS’s Project Access® more than ever before” Schwarz said.

Come to Heartstrings on May 23rd and May 24th from 11am to 6pm at the Mountain Sports Festival at Carrier Park and help support your neighbors in need.
