In 2007, White Horse owners Bob Hinkle and Kim Hughes left New York, where they enjoyed long careers in the music and entertainment industry for many years and relocated to the mountains of North Carolina (where Bob had been born) looking for new adventures. In 2008, they had a vision; a vision of a room filled with good people enjoying good music in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Six years later the White Horse has become a well loved listening room venue for top touring acts as well as a host of many of Asheville and the surrounding areas best loved musicians from a vast range of genres. The White Horse has won the Best of WNC poll for Music Venue in Black Mountain in 2009, 2nd place Best Saturday Night Hang Out 2013, Best Music Venue in Black Mountain and best venue that gives back to the community in Black Mountain 2014.
White Horse has also donated use of it’s building for numerous benefit events including the Rwandan Mizero Children and LEAF International, Full Moon Farms, Southern Fried Blues Society, a medical fundraiser for Chris Kew featuring Acoustic Syndicate, Help Haiti Heal, the local Montessori School, Save Our Slopes, and other organizations. They are continuing to help support other local Non- profits with new programs in 2015.
BJ Leiderman: Best known as the composer of Public Radio’s most memorable themes for over 30 year, including Morning Edition, Weekend Edition, Marketplace and Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me!, BJ will celebrate this White Horse anniversary with some of his original songs currently being recorded for his upcoming debut album, ‘Natural Public Leiderman’.
Kat Williams: In 1997, Kat moved to Asheville, NC and soon took the town by storm, becoming the most sought after singer in the region. She bared her soul to the crowd, inviting audiences in for a glimpse of a truly phenomenal woman and an authentic, from the heart, performer. Years later, Kat’s musical philosophy is “I have no competition- I can only give you the best of me.” Filled with a passion for song, an astonishing animated style, a spirited sense of humor, and that remarkable laugh, Kat takes the stage and makes magic happen.
Kat was nominated by the Christian Music Hall of Fame for a Visionary Award as 2009 Urban Performer of the Year for her work with local musical youth on PBS. In 2010 Kat had the honor of singing the National Anthem for President Bill Clinton. In 2012 Kat was nominated for an Emmy for her contribution to the “Hands of Hope” project and 2012 AMG Female Vocalist of the Year.
Singer, actress, and songwriter, Kat is truly a triple threat. She can perform Jazz, Blues, Motown, R&B, Rock, Pop and Gospel. Though she is constantly in demand, she is loyal to her many fans, maintaining personal friendships with many of them. She is truly a remarkable woman and an electrifying and unforgettable performer.
Belfast Boys: A dynamic Irish traditional music duo, The Belfast Boys hail from the Troubled streets of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Alyn Mearns is an award-winning classical guitarist, and Adrian Rice is one of Ulster’s pre-eminent poets. Modern Irish bards, Adrian and Alyn provide a rare blend of music, poetry and stories drawn from the deep reservoir of their shared Northern heritage. Known for their stunning re-inventions of popular classics such as ‘Danny Boy’ and ‘The Mountains of Mourne’, The Belfast Boys are also armed with a high voltage repertoire of jigs and reels. The Boys reputation for heartbreaking, heart-racing performances is quickly spreading across the Carolinas and beyond.
