On Sunday, July 28, a collaboration of local artists, performers and enthusiasts will parade along-side and across Highway 240, into the River Arts District. Their goals are both to reclaim unused public space, and to facilitate the discarding of unused objects in a ceremonial style. The parade will end in the parking area of Hatchery Studios, where a temporary art instillation will have already been constructed.
This installation will consist of a colored sawdust mandala covering a large area of the concrete parking lot, the design of which will be influenced by the work of Hildegard von Bingen and the sawdust alfombras used in the Peruvian Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria. Aaron Beck will perform a version of his Animare Project, an endurance dance project, on this mandala.
A group of dancers and performers will lead participants and any participating groups along the parade path. Although the style of these parade leaders has been pre-arranged, any participating groups are welcome to interpret the parade however they choose, and dress accordingly.
Participants of the parade are asked to bring unused items from their homes, anything they have held onto without reason and would be better off throwing away. These participants will be led from the Westgate shopping center parking lot and along the pedestrian bridge that leads to the River Arts District. Once at the Hatchery, their objects can be left, and the parade will merge with Beck’s Animare project.
