Young mounts primary challenge to Newman for commission seat

Here’s the press release from the campaign of Keith Young:

Asheville, N.C.- Former vice-chairman of the county Democratic Party, Democrat Keith Young says he will make a second run for a seat on the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners.

Young stated “I believe in people who wake up everyday and believe in the American Dream, upward mobility, and home ownership.”

He described concerns about the handling of affordable housing and how our focus has been on rental and not actual ownership. Young also wants to develop our infrastructure. He believes the county can also reevaluate how we help our teachers locally with funds currently going into the school system that are not already earmarked for current or future construction.

The former vice-chair believes new blood and fresh ideas are needed to impact the overall decision-making by the county board of commissioners. In a written statement Young said,

“I’m perplexed. It startles me when no one talks about upward mobility in our area, as if its not something we can address when our overall governmental decisions may effect it adversely. What about home ownership as an affordable housing solution? Dealing with urban sprawl and its effects on upward mobility. What about our teachers? What about infrastructure improvements? Lets take a closer look at our budget. Lets work with the city to provide mass transit options. These are obvious problems we can address. Bold problems require bold action, forward progressive thinking, and a pragmatic solution. Why haven’t we made any of them a priority?”

Young’s forward thinking is the basis for the new era in progressive policies. A pragmatic look at the problems we face. Young believes bold solutions require bold actions.

Young Said“ If we as voters are unable to recognize when current leadership is not bold enough to address valid issues, we become a shadow of the community we believe we represent.”

Young is president of the African-American Caucus and a member of the state Executive Committee of the Democratic Party. He is also a former small business owner and media consultant. He is currently an educator for Asheville City Schools.
