Small Bites

What’s good for business may be good for your belly. On Thursday, Jan. 25, the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce will hold the first “Chow Down with the Chamber,” a fund-raiser to support the chamber’s many local programs. On that day, participating restaurants (see a list at www.ashevillechamber.org) will donate 10 percent of their profits to the chamber. The event replaces the annual Culinary Showcase, which proved so popular that it outgrew its venue, the Grove Park Inn. For more information, call the chamber at 258-6131.

North Star Diner, the eagerly awaited collaboration between Early Girl Eatery and Joe Eckert of Jack of the Wood and Laughing Seed Cafe, opened earlier this month in Weaverville. The restaurant, which serves American classics created from local ingredients, is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The entire menu is available at any hour, which means you no longer have to set your alarm to get your breakfast fix. The diner is at 61-C Weaver Blvd., alongside Ace Hardware. For more information, call 658-1300.

Apparently new restaurants are in season: Amy Lyda, chef-owner of Black Mountain Bistro, opened Harvest Restaurant in East Asheville’s Old Eastwood Village on New Year’s Eve. The restaurant is serving an array of steaks, pastas, pizzas and sandwiches for lunch and dinner. Call 298-4741 to learn more.

Xpress A&E Reporter Alli Marshall has always been heroic, but her feats of strength — including quietly watching this food writer ruthlessly devour animal flesh — were just recently noted by local blogger Jill C. Yarnall, who has named Marshall Veggie Hero of the Week. She earned the honor by landing an essay on the back page of the current edition of VegNews, a vegetarian-lifestyle magazine. Yarnall’s interview with Marshall is online at newheritagecooking.blogspot.com.
