Buncombe GOP searches for commish candidate

With former Asheville City Council member Joe Dunn dropping out of the race for a county commissioner’s seat, the Buncombe County Republican Party has put out an open call for a replacement candidate.

According to the official announcement, the party’s executive committee, led by Chair Timothy Johnson, is taking nominations, inviting any Republican to submit their name. They’ll officially decide on a replacement candidate on Aug. 18. That person will join John Carroll, Ron McKee and Don Yelton, who all won the May primary along with Dunn. They’ll face the Democratic Party’s nominees, City Council member Holly Jones, former AB-Tech President K. Ray Bailey and current commissioners Carol Peterson and Bill Stanley.

  1. Reality Check

How about Mumpower? He doesn’t seem to want the Congressional seat that he primaried for and defeated a couple of guys who actually seemed to have interest it. He ought to have plenty of time on his hands.

  2. The neat thing about this election’s Congressional race, regardless of whether Carl or Heath wins, progressives are still going to be apoplectic and conservatives generally satisfied.

But I’m still pulling for Carl.

  3. Apoplectic, Ralph?

I’m entirely pleased with Shuler’s votes on workers’ rights, environmental legislation, small business, education, and more. While there are some areas that he falls short in, I’m hardly cursing his name.

  4. Reality Check

Heath is definitely not the “Pelosi Boy” everyone thought would happen. The right was sure of it and the left hoped for it. Neither were correct.

  5. Gordon, you were not so complimentary to Shuler when I heard you discuss him in person… and the same on some of your postings.

Shuler is actually closer to the old time ‘Solid South’ Democrats we had when I was growing up then. It’s a whole different party now.
