Concerned or excited about the prospect of increased oil and gas development in Western North Carolina?
The North Carolina Mining and Energy Commission has scheduled a public hearing for Sept. 12 in Cullowhee and welcomes your feedback on proposed rules that could help pave the way for hydraulic fracturing – also known as ‘fracking’ – in the region. The hearing will take place from 5 – 9 p.m. at the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center, 199 Centennial Drive. People wishing to speak during the hearing are asked to register starting at 4 p.m. The hearing will be recorded.
Written comments will also be accepted at the public hearing and may also be submitted at any time July 15‒Sept. 15.
If you can’t make the hearing, hard copy written comments should be sent to:
DENR-Division of Energy, Mineral, and Land Resources
Attn: Oil and Gas Program
1612 Mail Service Center
Raleigh, NC 27699-1612
Written comments may also be submitted electronically through the state Division of Energy, Mineral and Land Resources’ website.
The complete text of the proposed rules and proposed revisions is available online here.
The Sept. 12 hearing is the only scheduled for WNC. Others in the state are planned for Aug. 20 in Raleigh, Aug. 22 in Sanford and Aug. 25 in Reidsville.
