Affordable housing important to thriving community

Please support affordable housing so that Asheville can be a thriving community.

I read that 1,400 new apartments are getting built right now, and almost none of them are affordable to the average worker in Asheville. There are countless talented people here, and we need them to remain here. If there is affordable living, then they could have a chance to make it here. They could save money for things like college, cars and education. Asheville is on a different top-10 list every week.

Members of my family who do not live here recently commented on this fact. Will our popularity mean that the people who helped to make us so popular will have to move away? That’s exactly what it means unless Asheville does something to make it more affordable to live here.

This is an important issue that requires a simple solution. Provide affordable housing to those who need it. Continue to make Asheville a place where people want to live and can live. Continue to make those of us who can afford to live here proud that we call Asheville home.

  1. Affordability is a function of supply and demand an no socialist policy can ever change that. To get affordability, you MUST either increase supply or reduce demand. Increasing supply means deregulating to allow builders to build 14 thousand units, not 14 hundred; and reducing demand means funding municipal contraception.

OH Alan you have used the same tired AYN RAND oriented argument for years. What you miss is the free market has NO CONSCIENCE. bless your heart son.. you beat that horse over and over.. Guess you have no ability to see things through anyones eyes but your own.I feel truly sorry for you brother.I really do. I have met you and you seem a nice person.. Misguided perhaps but inherently well meaning. Guess you never had to deal with substandard housing for 20 years till you found a decent landlord. Mold, formaldehyde and so many wrongs it’s not worth reiterating have taught me that one size solutions don’t fit life which is not one size fits all. Shall pray for you sir.
