Letter: Start taking pride in WNC

Graphic by Lori Deaton

Mountain pride — think about what this means. Living here in these gorgeous mountains, I feel a great love and pride in this area. I have lived in other states before, but this truly is a wonderful place.

But then as I drive the roads in this area, all I see is trash along the roadways, discarded mattresses and furniture, and I wonder: Where is the pride of people who live here? How can anyone not take more pride in this beautiful home of western Carolina?

And also the killing of the bears: How can anyone kill a bear and just leave it to rot by the roadside after cutting off its paws? What, for souvenirs? This is disgusting!

The Cherokee would hunt bear, but they did it for survival. They would utilize all the parts, and so the bear would be killed with respect. Many hunters now have no respect for wildlife. It is all for a trophy.

I hope people start to realize how lucky they are to live in such a beautiful, unique place and start taking some pride in their home.

It’s indicative of the regional IQ and mentality, along with no education.

Seems like the regional folks were doing quite well before the transplants arrived.

It’s hard to take pride in a town with panhandlers on every corner, shanty town tent camps with trash all over the place, a city staff of 1100 and there’s still trash everywhere, a DA that won’t prosecute basically anyone unless it’s murder, half a police force because the city won’t support them, used piles of needles everywhere, the stench of urine downtown, rising crime on all sides of town and a city council that cares about nothing except new hotels. What’s to take pride in?

That’s a little unfair. The council does like to pass proclamations that have nothing to do with their asheville responsibilities.

Just got back from another blue city, NYC, and the trash is horrible. Same with San Francisco. Progressive leftist Sanctuary Cities will always be trashy because the populace is not held accountable for their community. Not their job to pick up the trash they toss. And who can blame the trash that the homeless leave wherever they camp? Strive to be more like Tokyo, where one can practically eat off the road. Go woke, go broke.
